A recent survey by the American Accounting Association revealed 23?

A recent survey by the American Accounting Association revealed 23 percent of students

graduating with a major in accounting select public accounting. Suppose we select a sample

of 15 recent graduates.

a. What is the probability two select public accounting?

b. What is the probability five select public accounting?

c. How many graduates would you expect to select public accounting?

A recent survey by the American Accounting Association revealed 23?
question c is the easiest 23% of 15 = 3.45

questions a %26amp; b require someone good in probability but dont require the 23% as each students decision is independent of the survey.

question a i would guess is 40/560

question b i would guess is 170/560

Maybe you should approach a temp agency, express an interest in their services and see if they offer you one.

What sampling method that use to survey the opinions of the franchise towards the current distribution system?

sampling method that suitable for my research

What sampling method that use to survey the opinions of the franchise towards the current distribution system?
simple random sampling would be a good start. Stratified sampling would be best.

the analysis of categorical data is difficult. look at the type of analysis you are looking to do and then develop a sampling method that will meet the assumptions of your analysis methods.

On a survey of most competive sport they used results of 5 pro sports what is the sample and target population

for statistics

On a survey of most competive sport they used results of 5 pro sports what is the sample and target population
your question is unclear. Who is "they" and where did 'they' conduct this survey.

Anyway - the sample size is the number of people who actually took the survey, and the target population is who the sample should be representing.

For example, let's say that that in this case 100 males between the ages of 13-19 were surveyed. Your sample size is 100 and your target population is teenage boys.

Same survey or census..which 1?

For each situation, would you suggest sample survey or census to be conducted? Explain

a) A car manufacter wants to find out if Canadian familes with young children a minifan to a SUV as the family car.

b) A district school board wants to know how many students who are in grade 10 math achiv scores over 90%

13 minutes ago - 3 days left to answer.

Same survey or census..which 1?
Remember a survey only asks a part of the population (sample) and makes much more sense when the population is very large. A census includes EVERY member of a population.

a. survey would be more appropriate as the population under study is very large (thousands of families)

b. census as data for all 10th grade students is easily obtained and the population size is relatively small ( a few hundred at most)

Mystery Shopping Survey for Mobile Accessories shop?

I want to make a mystery shopping research for a relative that has small chain of shops about mobile phones %26amp; accessories. We listed some questions both quantitative and qualitative But we still need some sample forms, questions or sections that should be included in the form. Could you please give some examples, or make some suggestions for survey design?

Thanks in advance...

Mystery Shopping Survey for Mobile Accessories shop?
I suggest you join the Yahoo! Group mystery-shopper . It is a group of shoppers, schedulers, and mystery shopper companies. Once you have joined and your membership has been approved, you could ask this question of these experts! Mystery shoppers don't make up the questions asked but they can surely provide you some examples of questions asked and provide you some examples of some of the dumbest questions asked.
Reply:i think your survey should be accurate and concise. Accurate means you will get results from that paper; concise means simple design making your customer a ease to fill the form, better all selective questions

What do you look for in a Daycare Center?

As a parent, employee, or just because. What do you look for in a daycare. I currently work in a family owned business and we're trying to get different ideas and aspects of things from people. Even if its basic plain and simple; we like cleanlyness, warm feeling enviornments, ect.

What would catch your attention on a flyer?

If you can think of anything else, this is only a sample survey and more for curiosity than anything, write them down.

I appreciate it, thanks!

What do you look for in a Daycare Center?
Make sure they are licensed by your state.

Cleanliness is a must!

Educational program. Get the most for your money.

Warning signs:

1. Day-care workers won't or can't answer questions, and don't respond to your requests or concerns.

2. Parents aren't allowed to participate in daily activities with their children.

3. Your child doesn't like going to a particular facility. Likely being mistreated!

4. Frequent accidents or injuries without adequate explanation.

5. Frequent turnover among staff.

6. Negative feedback or experiences from other parents.

What can be done for the upliftment of the poor in India?

India remains one of the poorest countries in the world: 34.7% of India population still live on less than US$1 a day and 79.9% live on US$2 per day. The National sample survey organisation (NSSO) estimated that 26.1% of the population was living below the poverty line.

The recent ecenomic developments have mainly helped upper and middle class Indians.

What do you think, will help in eradicating poverty in India?

So i really don't know.
Reply:When I lived in India, there was not programs sponsored by the government to help the poor.

i think if the Goverbment would fund some programs to help the poor that would be the first step. 2nd step would be to get the companies and the business commnity to get incolve they could sponsor programs and get tax deductions for their donations for it .

the programs could include Food Pantries, Soup Kitchen, Free clinic's, free/discounted technical education.
Reply:Let their government figure it out.......
Reply:Your government and those big companies must join hands in helping them. They must provide them with shelter and give them free education as well as means of livelihood.

Similar to my own personal project, I am a member of the Church Choir. But I extend my involvement further by conducting Medical Mission. All I did was to save my own money to buy medicines. Then another phase to save money to transport the volunteer doctors to and from the remotest places. Once everything is ready, from Medicines, Transportation Allowances, Food, and a place for the Mission, that's the time I would proceed. This is my lone self fulfillment.

May GOD help me with this noble Mission for the rest of my life. Amen.
Reply:To make local economies work for the poor, you need specific intervention programmes that are designed to INVOLVE to poor. The local intelligence of communities are so often under-estimated, and some 'methods' could be to facilitate problem-solving at LOCAL level with low-income groups. In simple terms: Have you posed the question to the ones that you are talking about??

they are going to stay poor for the most part. It is a spiritual

Reply:India was once one of the richest places in the entire world. Most of its economic and social problems are the result of war and foreign invasion. Let India decide what needs to be done to eradicate poverty. Then offer to help them do it.It is a massive task and will take a lot of doing.

That is a job for on the spot experts to take care of.

Reply:Never give them money donations. Use all money to hire crews and buy materials directly, to build schools, hospitals, water treatment plants etc, on land owned and controlled by the United Nations. Demand here in the US that no product can be imported from there that doesn't pay at least half the same wages to workers there that is paid to any worker here. There is no excuse for capitalizing on their poverty. Business exploitation is much more devastating to any country than terrorism.

Imagine a population of 1.3 billion ,out of which if we consider 10 million people donating 1 rupee every month ,each month we have 10million indian rupees not a small money ,Sounds interesting.......isnt it ? but i dont think even one 1000 rupees will reach the real poor people because of coruption.above all ,how can we find out who is the poorest without race religion and age , who will manage the funding. these are my doubts ..I really appriciate ur concerns for por indians.

iii) Electricity was taken to the village in many of the states so also elementary and higher secondary schools.

iv) Women's education was given a clear direction.

v) The 5 year plans brought in with it change in life style of the middle class.

vi) Backward classes were given concessions in the reservation in educational institution, employment and in carrer advancement. (Promotion)

vii) Public sector units in almost all the fiedls were started.

AFTER 1975:

3. i) Nationalisastion of Banks and through that Industry and agriculture were supported at the appropriate time.

ii) Indian Institute of Technology, the pride of today came into being at several places.

iii) Housing loans became easier.

iv) New set of graduates from higher technical educational institutions were sought after by other countries. Indian Doctors started serving in U.K. and U.S.A.

v) Skilled men at different levels went on secondment and also for jobs abroad, including Gulf countries and South East Asia.

iv) Multi-fold increase in no. of men working in abroad;

v) Foreign exchange position became better

vi) Space technology showed a clear improvement.

Naturally the living style of many have changed for the better.

Then where is the problem? "Population". The statistics given by you does not speak of percentage increase of population and percentage increase in per capita income. Then it can be understood, a lot has been achieved against heavy odds, by a country which has seen 3 wars and with increased defence expenditure.

When a sample was surveyed on their preferance for yogurt flavor, 12 said vanilla and 8 said banana.?

The total group was 160. How many people wer ein the survey? What is the probability that a person prefers vanilla? Predict how many of othe 160 people prefer vanilla.

When a sample was surveyed on their preferance for yogurt flavor, 12 said vanilla and 8 said banana.?
20 in sample

12/20 prefer vanilla or 6/10 or 60% probability that a person prefers vanilla

60% of 160 = 96

( .6 * 160 )
Reply:Hell if i know, i don't even like yogurt.
Reply:Number of people on survey=12+8=20

P(V)=12/20=0.6

160*0.6=96
Reply:20 out of 160 people (1/8 or 12.5% of the group) were in the survey.

Probability that a person prefers vanilla =

12 / (12+8) = 3/5 = 0.6 or 60%.

This assumes that all the sample respondents answered either vanilla or banana (this is not stated explicitly).

Out of 160 people, we would expect 60%, or 96 people, to prefer vanilla.

I need some good references into finding out exactly how they work.

For a certain data sample there were 4000 people surveyed. It was shown that the data was normally distributed

If the mean score for this data is 50 and the standard deviation is 5.5, how many people had a score between 39 and 50?

For a certain data sample there were 4000 people surveyed. It was shown that the data was normally distributed
The standard score for the interval in question is -2 %26lt; z %26lt; 0. For a normal distribution, about 47.72 percent of the respondents' answers would fall within this interval. This represents about 1909 people in the survey.

I'm doing a survey on gay marriage. How do i come up with a random sample for it?

People on the street, usually one of the best ways since you don't know if the people you see are gay or straight.

I wouldn't suggest asking in this category simply because we're mostly gay/lesbian/bisexuals and transgenders in here.

I'm doing a survey on gay marriage. How do i come up with a random sample for it?
I wouldn't suggest that you post your poll here at Yahoo at all, since you will be introducing a bias - I would tend to believe the demographic here is skewed toward the young and the educated/computer savvy.

The best way to do a random sample is to use the telephone at random and at random times. If you, for example, only called people at 3pm on a Tuesday, then you will be missing out on many working people.

I like the suggestion that someone else had of asking people on the street. That's about as random as you can get without calling people!

Good luck!
Reply:post your question in "polls and surveys"
Reply:For the internet? The Polls Survey section is probably gonna be the best.

In real life, find an area like mall or town center area where a variety of people congregate and then ask for their opinions straight out.

Phrasing is very important.

"Shouldn't gays be allowed to marry?" is biased toward the yes answer.

"Gay shouldn't be allowed to marry, right?" is biased toward the not being able to answer part.

It's best to just ask it straight out "Do you believe gay people should have the right to marry each other?" is probably your best bet.

Where can you find this web questionnaire sample?

I'm on a budget and need to make a web questionnaire to be filled out by a dozen people located around the nation. The people need ot be able to save their questionnaire and change their answers at a later time if need be. I looked into hosted web survey places and asp database creation, but can't find a hosted place that allow for saving or a sample database that will allow me not to have to start from scratch. Any suggestions? It needs to be online, with a save/load option, and the answers exportable to excel. Thanks!

With an expected 20/80 split on survey answers, error 4% & 99% confidence interval what sample size do I need?

Confidence interval for the sample proportion is

phat +- z*sqrt(phat(1-phat)/n))

The error is determined by the plus or minus part of this expression. If you want a 99% confidence interval, then z = 2.576. Since you expect a 20/80 split, phat = 0.2. And you want this plus or minus number to be less than or equal to 0.04 (4%). So...

2.576*sqrt(0.2(1-0.2)/n) = 0.04

Then solve for n

sqrt(0.2(0.8)/n) = 0.04/2.576 = 0.01553

0.16/n = 0.01553^2 = 0.00024112

n/0.16 = 1/0.00024112 = 4147.36

n = 4147.36*0.16 = 663.5776,

which you should always round up, so you would need a sample of 664 or more to make the error less than or equal to 0.04.

What is the % of a population that should be randomly tested for a scientific survey?

I need to take a random survey in our county. What percentage of the population should I ask in order to have an appropriate sampling?

What is the % of a population that should be randomly tested for a scientific survey?
Use this formula.

n=Z^2a/2/4E^2

n= sample size

Z^2a/2= your Z score, or area under the normal curve. Will depend on your confidence interval. Say, wanting 90% of data within 3 std of mean

4E^2 4 times acceptable error squared. Set error at 0.05, which is standard.

You need a Z score chart and a rudimentary knowledge of statistics, but this formula save much money on too large a sample size, or too small a size.
Reply:5% although there is no set number you need....
Reply:I would suggest around 5 to 10% of the 'available' population, but bear in mind that you need to sample people from various age groups, so you could be limited in an area that's dominated by very young, very old, or middle-aged people. It's all down to the law of averages.

What kind of questions should I ask on a survey, to determine if color affects peoples moods?

Im conducting an experiment, and I have almost everything I need in order to complete my experiment, but I also want to ask a survey to see if the questions I ask effect the answer of the person give according to the paper. I've researched for sample questions I can ask but im still having a lot of trouble.. can anyone offer some good advice for questions.. I would appreciate it greatly..

What kind of questions should I ask on a survey, to determine if color affects peoples moods?
Make a book of colors as many as you want...

When doing the interviews flash the color in front of the person and hand them a pre-designed response for to check off.

Put your responses going across the top

Put the colors going down the page

make sure to have it in columns.

Example of responses

1. Happy 2. Sad 3.Melancholy

4. Angry 5.Indifferent 6.Extreme Rage

Only in a single line..............

1Colors going in this directions

2

3

4

5

the it will be easy to tally up
Reply:In order to prove this you have to hide the actual purpose of the survey. Put the respondents in a monocolor environment, then use Likert scale questions to determine their mood. If you do not have the resources to change the entire environment, you could prove something just by putting the mood survey on different color papers.

I know there has been studies in the past about how color affects moral, work, and productivity. They basically modified the colors then observed the effects. Model the same idea but use a survey to measure the mood.
Reply:I am assuming you meant that you would be using different colored paper to put the same survey on... i.e. red paper with questions a-g then blue paper with questions a-g and so on....

You should ask emotion-type questions. Word them differently for the different colors but keep them the same premise.

Ask questions that would provoke strong emotions so you can get clear answers. Give them situational questions. What would you do in this situation? Give scenerios and keep them consistent from paper to paper. That way the questions are your constant.
Reply:I would write a list of colors and ask the people taking the survey to write down the emotion they associate with that color.
Reply:put different colors in different boxes then ask what they think about it

Describe how you would conduct a survey that identified the most popular flavors of ice cream?

Describe how you would conduct a survey that identified the most popular flavors of ice cream. Identify your target population and what kind of sample you would use. Explain what method of observation you might use to help generalize your findings.

I have to write an essay on that.. and I'm not real good with this type of thing so I'd appreciated it if you could help me out a little.

Describe how you would conduct a survey that identified the most popular flavors of ice cream?
You could go down to a local ice cream shop like baskinrobins or marble slab creamery and just sit and watch recording the flavors that people are asking, giving you a random selection of the population over a one hour period.

Go to a supermarket and watch people or speak with a manager and ask them amount the amounts that they order over a week by flavor.

You could set up an ice cream stand yourself at a kids baseball game and then record how many people stop by and what they wanted.
Reply:do it yourself its not that hard
Reply:Stand in the ice cream aisle and ask.

Hope this helps. Like you I am always on the lookout for the best free quality products, samples and or services on the net. Without all the headaches! The hardest part is the research of finding it all in one good place! Well, good news! I found it!

This site is the best ALL-IN-ONE free quality stuff, I have ever come across! Like I said, All in one place!

Yes, it is a membership site and the small monthly cost of being a member far outweighs the cost! (Less than $10's)

The best part, the site pays you to refer others. It's easy to get others to join...who doesn't like free stuff! Your membership cost is covered in no time at all! I know, I did it in less than a week! Not to mention, the hundreds of dollars I had already saved in free stuff all provided by the site! It's a no-brainer!

The founder of the site put out a book a while back on how to practically live off of free stuff from the internet. And less than 48 hours ago, launched a nationwide infomercial tv campaign to help people save a lot of money, as well as make a lot of money for helping others. It's the best of both worlds!

What is the percentage of any survey that can consider as valid?

i'm doing social research survey.and i'm curios of the sample size that i should take so that my survey result would be valid.can anyone help me..thanx

What is the percentage of any survey that can consider as valid?
1 in 100 or 1 in 1000. Make sure you do it in a wide array of regions, though or else you will get bias results because you were in a subgroup, like just people on school campus,or dorm yards, spread it out through your town/city
Reply:before deciding the sample size, what is the size of the population you are going to consider?..i mean, for a particular area, there may be a defined population level, apprx...the higher the sample size, the more accurate your survey would be...if your survey needs greater accuracy, go for a higher sample size..

for moderately accurate surveys, go for a 30% sample size..but if the population size is high, say 1000 or so within a short duration of time, then go for a lesser sample size..

8 out of 10 brides. How large a sample to estimate proportion within 3% with 98% confidence?

A survey by Brides magazine found that 8 out of 10 brides are planning to take the surname of their new husband. How large a sample is needed to estimate the true proportion within 3% with 98% confidence?

8 out of 10 brides. How large a sample to estimate proportion within 3% with 98% confidence?
Confidence intervals are used to find a region in which we are 100 * ( 1 - α )% confident the true value of the parameter is in the interval.

For large sample confidence intervals about the population proportion you have:

pHat ± z * sqrt(phat * (1- phat) / n)

where phat is the sample proportion

z is the zscore for having α% of the data in the tails, i.e., P( |Z| %26gt; z) = α

n is the sample size

To find the sample size needed for a confidence interval of a given size we need only to concern ourselves with the error term and the width of the interval.

We know that the interval is centered at phat so we need to find the value of n such that

z * sqrt(phat * (1-phat) / n) = width.

The z-score for a 0.98 confidence interval is the value of z such that 0.01 is in each tail of the distribution.

z= 2.326348

The equation we need to solve is: z * sqrt(phat * (1-phat) / n) = width

n = phat * (1 - phat) * (width / z) ^ -2.

If we don't know anything about phat and are still asked to find the sample size we let phat = 0.5. This maximizes the value of the error term and if n is sufficient for phat = 0.5, the n will be sufficient for all other values of phat.

n = 0.8 * ( 1 - 0.8 ) * ( 0.03 / 2.326348 ) ^ -2

n = 962.1146

n must be integer valued. Always take the ceiling of n so that the size of the interval will be correct.

n = 963

If I were to make a survey on any issue , how do i select my sample.please give examples?

If you want a statistically valid sample, it must include responses from 1200 people drawn at random.

The questions must be posed in such a manner that no bias is introduced to skew the results.

Gender, Race, Religion, Political Party, Geography, Regional Variation, Language and Social and Economic Elements if not reduced in study impact can all skew the results to introduce errors.

The Poll taker must be careful in conducting the poll to prevent introducing errors into the question and answer process.

To insure a random selection process, the group to be interviewed should be drawn from a valid pool of people, such as a Voter Registration list.

The language of the questions should not skew the results by the use of inflammatory terms, or uncommon adverbs to distort or bias listeners. Then the results of the questionaire must be analyzed. A statistically valid survey will be accurate to +/- 3 percent, if the results are free of poll errors.

You're conducting a survey to determine how many alcohlic beverages students from the local university consume per week. To avoid having a biased sample, you decide to

A. include the same proportion of males and females as found in the student population as a whole.

B. survey students who are members of fraternities and sororitites and none from the academic clubs.

C. Have members of local law enforcement administer teh survey to the students.

D. post your survey on the college Web site to ensure a representative sample of the college population.

You're conducting a survey to determine how many alcoholic beverages students from the local university consum
I am sure there is a question there but already I see a couple of biases in your survey.

1. by including only the frat houses you have biased the student population. If you want to know how many a student consumes you need to get a cross section of all students. If you only want to know how much a frat student drinks then you need to change your question.

2. having law enforcement administer the test will eliminate many students because they may be under-age or afraid that the law enforcement officers will use the survey to target the next party.

It may reduce randomness a bit, but it maintains the makeup of the sample group and would be far more representative of the whole than B or D. C would just be bad.

Reply:All four are bad choices:

A reduces randomness in the survey

B causes a skew in results (reduces randomness by surveying a population within the population)

C causes dishonest answers

D causes a skew in results (reduces randomness by surveying a population within the population)

Edit: Making sure your survey proportions are identical to the population proportions is an invalid and incorrect way of conducting a truly random survey folks. Random means random. A survey that is not random is not a reputable survey.

Taking a sample size for this survey - All the children who are born in the 21st century - let know about this
Less social, imagination, and physical activity skills. I believe there is a need for concern. Not as much as values maybe, but just getting along with others and playing outside like kids used to. Also as a teacher, getting them to write stories has become more difficult over the years. They seem to lack as much imagination that came with the games and books we used to read.
Reply:no,even now kids do play such games
Reply:I'm not entirely sure. But the kids that don't play on playgrounds won't get a chance to develop their sharing and socializing skills as much as children that do.

Can you give me any sample data of a survey ?

You could ask people: how many cities they've lived in, visited; how many types of cake they can think of; what their favorite pet(s) may be.

Is there a formula that says, if you ask n questions on a survey, you should give the survey to N people?

I am going to give a 53 item survey to a group of people. I know that there are formulas to determine how many people I should give it to, for probability and confidence; however, is there a formula that would indicate the correct number of people to give it to? This is about the number of items and the number of people. It's related to traditional statistical sample size, but it's about survey items and number of participants. Any help or reference material would be appreciated.

Is there a formula that says, if you ask n questions on a survey, you should give the survey to N people?
I dont see how the number of questions would affect the sample size. The sample size is usually dependant on the total population.

This site can calculate it for you:http://www.surveysystem.com/sscalc.htm
Reply:I work for a statistical agency and I can tell you the only relationship between the number of questions and the sample size is that they both affect the cost of taking the survey. So you may have to make a choice between more questions and more precision (by sampling more), based on your pocketbook.
Reply:No. At least I don't think so.

When you asked 612 people, the answer from the sample is within +- 4% of the true population answer.

From central limit theorem....
Reply:I don't think so. But what you can do is get a feeling for 'internal consistency'. That is, you look at how people who answered one or a certain sample of questions one way, also answered another sample of questions. Did they follow similar patterns or is there no correlation between people and questions?

What this gets at is how consistent they actual survey is. Do people tend to understand what a question is asking? The larger your sample, the better you can demonstrate internal consistency. Another technique related to this is asking questions that are similar in slightly different ways.

Look at how the SAT is analysed to get a feel for this sort of internal consistency. They use it to drop questions that are statistically inconsistent with the rest of the test.

The math for this is to extract certain questions out and redo the overall stats. If you find a question that skews the stats overmuch, then that question is, well, questionable.

When the results of a survey or poll are published, the sample size and the margin of error are both given.?

For example: 1000 voters were surveyed and 39±2% of the voters agreeing with the president. In this example N=1000 and the margin of error (MoE) is 2%. What isn't given is the confidence interval. Is it 90%, 95%, or 99%? Does it matter? A confidence interval of 95% is most commonly used when reporting survey results.

Visit the website http://www.pollingreport.com.

This website lists several public opinion polls. Search the site and find a poll where the sample size and margin of error are given. Try to find a poll dealing with topic in your profession. Give the topic of the poll, the sample size and margin of error. Do you think the results from the sample reflect public opinion?

When the results of a survey or poll are published, the sample size and the margin of error are both given.?
That's because the confidence level in polling uses 95% confidence as the standard. You are correct that varying the confidence level would widen or narrow the margin of error interval, but public polling results use the same confidence level.

Sample questions for KAP survey on exclusive breastfeeding?

Please, what is KAP survey? The only thing I KNOW about breast feeding.....is, it's the absolutely the BEST thing you can do for your newborn! Even if it's only for 3 weeks! Believe that! And it's not a big deal, you can pump it or do it and right about the time you get used to it, you can quit. No problems.. just be prepared with lots of pads cause they get messy.. but its worth it X 10! As long as your healthy and dont forget the milk will taste like what ever your eating so lay off the onions and garlic for his sake. Your milk gives them all they will need that no formula or supliments can give that will make them strong, not to catch colds easy, ect. Making sure they wear the little cap they give you in the hospital helps that too. If you dont use it (the cap)for the newborn, they tend to have runny noses all the time while they are growing up. I mean runny. Oh, one more new mommy thing. For all those perfect skinned females that never got a streach mark, if you want that little waist back, let the doctor push it all out from the outside and, after its all done and over, get a baby blanket and tie it around your lower tummy tight, right away, keep your tummy tied in tight for a couple of days or so till it snapps back. and it will never be noticeable even a year down the road.

We conduct a survey and collect a representative sample?

We conduct a survey and collect a representative sample of 87 college students looking at our collected data in a simple contingency table, we consider the values of two variables, gender and no guns. the second variable measures attitudes on a gun-control measure with three possible responses: agree, undecided, and disagree. our hypothesis is as follows: women are more likely to support a measure controlling access to handguns than are men.

1. the unit of analysis in comparing the two variables will be

a. individuals.

b. guns.

c. attitudes about gun control.

d. either males or females.

2. the number of values for the dependent variable must be

a. three.

b. two.

c. two or three.

d. determined.

i think number 1 is c and number 2 b.

i want to make sure guys.

Thanks A Lot!!!!!

We conduct a survey and collect a representative sample?
Okay so I sucked at stats but I think you've got it backwards. #2 is a because the dependent variable is depending upon changes in the other. In this case, gun ownership is dependent on gender. But I think you're right about the unit of analysis being attitudes. Good luck!
Reply:You're not surveying "people", you're surveying people under the heavy influence of liberal ideals.

Your survey is tainted by the simple fact that you're not "representative" of any population. You haven't taken into consideration male/female, wage levels, education levels, or any other divisions in the US that might have an impact on a person's point of view.

It might be a good exercise to practice the numbers, but your survey will only come out as representative of the 87 college students.

If there are 300 billion stars in the galaxy, how many do you have to sample to get a valid survey?

This is a SETI statistics question. If there are 300 billion solar systems in the galaxy, how many solar systems would you have to survey without finding intelligent life to be 95% sure there is no other intelligent life in the galaxy except humans? What is the formula to determine the needed sample size based on a given population if you want your survey to be 95% accurate? Also, in statistics does a 95% confidence level mean the same thing as a +/- 5% margin of error? This is not a homework assignment. I’m just curious.

If there are 300 billion stars in the galaxy, how many do you have to sample to get a valid survey?
This is not such a simple statistics question.

Suppose you want to find out how many people in the U.S. normally vote for Democrats. You can get a very good estimate (to within a few percent) if the following apply:

1) You ask about 1000 people.

2) These 1000 people are truly a random sample. There must not be a selection effect that biases the results.

3) The people answer honestly.

One of the reasons this works is that the number of people who normally vote for Democrats is somewhere around 40%, so a sample of 1000 people will include many Democrats and others (independents and Republicans). If you want to know how many people vote for the Flat Earth Party, which has 5 members, a sample of 1000 won't tell you anything except that the number of Flat Earthers is very small. (This is a hypothetical party, in case you haven't guessed.) In a sample of 1000 in a country of 300 million, it is overwhelmingly likely that you will find no Flat Earthers.

When we search for life with SETI, first we have to be clear that we're searching for life that broadcasts its existence via radio waves. Nineteenth-century earth could not be found, because people did not use radio waves then. Perhaps super-advanced civilizations have found other methods that are superior to radio waves (but this is pure speculation). In short, we are searching for intelligent life similar to our own, or possibly much more advanced. The question then becomes how many stars in the galaxy have this kind of life.

The issue of a random sample is also a problem. It is easiest for us to examine nearby stars. Perhaps other parts of the galaxy are more or less likely to have intelligent life. Let's ignore this issue, and assume that we do a good random sample.

Here's another problem: In searching for radio signals, are we really looking at the correct frequencies? Let's ignore this issue also, and assume that we are.

The next problem is the probability P, the ratio of stars in our galaxy with intelligent life now to the total number of stars in the galaxy. (The word "now" is a bit problematic because of the speed-of-light lookback time. On a cosmic scale, however, the galaxy is quite small. Perhaps we miss some civilizations that have developed recently and we see others that no longer exist, but this doesn't change the statistics significantly.)

Suppose that P is relatively small. In that case, if we search N stars for life, the number in which we find life is governed by a Poisson distribution.

Here's an example: Suppose we hypothesize that P is 5% -- that is, one star out of 20 has the kind of intelligent life that we're seeking. If we look at 20 stars, we might find 1 with life, or maybe 2, or maybe 0. Suppose we search 1000 stars, and find N with life. If N is less than 36 or greater than 64, we can say with 95% certainty that P is *not* 5%. If we find 0, then we can say with almost complete certainty that P is not 5%.

Suppose we search 1000 stars and find N=0. We can say with 95% certainty that P is less than 0.3%. With a total of 300 billion stars in the galaxy, however, there is still a possibility of over 900,000,000 stars with intelligent life.

Suppose we search a million stars and find N=0. Now we can say with 95% certainty that P is less than 0.0003%, but that still leaves the possibility of 900,000 stars with intelligent life.

If we search 200 billion stars and find N=0, we can say with 95% certainty that P is less than 1.5e-11, but that still leaves the possibility of 1 or 2 stars with intelligent life (out of the 100 billion we haven't searched yet).

In other words, to rule out the likelihood of life in the galaxy, we would have to look for signals from the vast majority of stars (and we wouldn't be sure unless we looked at every last star).

The moral for SETI is this: If we look for intelligent civilizations by sampling stars randomly, the search will not succeed unless one of the following is true:

1) There are a substantial number of stars in the galaxy harboring life.

2) We happen to get very lucky.

-- edit

I initially made a mistake in millions vs. billions. That has now been corrected.

If we sample 260 billion stars and find no life, we're 95% certain that P is less than 1.15e-11, which means we are nearly certain that the number of life-bearing stars out of the remaining 40 billion is 0.46 or less. At this point, we might be willing to give up the search, but by now we've searched 87% of the stars in the galaxy! It's no longer a sample, but rather a study of nearly the complete population.

Maybe another important conclusion is this: We can never prove that there is not other intelligent life in the galaxy, but perhaps we can prove that there is; and that's the reason for SETI studies.

-- edit

To improve the chances of finding life, SETI studies might not necessarily look at stars randomly. If you want to pick out particular stars, you'd limit the search to those with a good chance of life (e.g., non-binary dwarf stars of a luminosity similar to or less than that of the sun). There are different kinds of SETI studies. Some target particular stars, while others are "piggybacked" onto a telescope, looking at whatever region of the sky a non-SETI researcher is studying.

-- edit

You asked about level of confidence vs. margin of error. This won't add anything significant to the discussion, but I'll describe it briefly because you asked.

Consider again the poll about Democratic voters. A proper statement of the results (depending on the sample size) might be something like this: The poll shows that 40% of Americans usually vote Democratic. We might say that we have 95% confidence that the actual number is between 38% and 42%, but 40% is our best guess. If we used a larger sample and measured 40%, perhaps we'd say that we have 95% confidence that the actual number is between 39% and 41%. There is a connection between the confidence level and the margin of error and the sample size, but it's not a trivial one.

Now consider the SETI example after examining one thousand stars and finding none with life. We would say that our best guess for P is P=0.0%, and we are 95% confident that P is in the range from 0.0% to 0.3%. (In this case, the lower part of the range equals our best guess, because you can't have a probability less than zero.)

-- edit

I've answered this by sticking to the premise you mentioned -- namely, that we study each star individually. That's one approach, but we'll never study 300 billion stars individually. (We can't even see most of them, and don't know where they are.)

But there's another approach: The sky contains about 41,253 square degrees. Suppose we use a radio telescope whose beam area is A square degrees. Then we can study the entire sky by looking at about 41253/A points; this kind of work is called a "survey." (To survey the entire sky, we need two observatories, one in the northern hemisphere and one in the southern.) At each point, we measure the signal over some length of time, and try to determine whether part of the signal could result from an intelligent civilization. This method is not guaranteed to find every intelligent source; for example, it is possible that the signal from some planet is overwhelmed by a bright natural source that happens to lie in the same direction. My main point is that you don't have to aim your radio telescope at 300 billion points, but a much smaller number. This method gives us hope that we might be able to find intelligent life in the galaxy even if it is very rare.

To summarize, there are at least three different methods that can be used for SETI:

1) Target individual stars, particularly those that seem promising.

2) Use a "piggyback" program that does a SETI analysis of all signals detected for other research programs.

3) Do a partial-sky or whole-sky survey.

-- edit (regarding the recent additions to your question)

"If a sample of 1000 is enough for a good survey in a population of 300 million people in the U.S., does it follow that you can just multiply the numbers in this example by 1000 and say that a sample of 1 million is enough for a good survey in a population of 300 billion solar systems?"

No. For a political survey like the one I mentioned, a sample of 1000 gives you a good result, regardless of whether the population is a million or a billion. The standard deviation for a normal distribution is sqrt(N*p*(1-p)). Here's an example: Suppose you ask some question (e.g., will you vote for Obama?) for which the true answer is 40%. Then p=0.4. If you conduct a poll that asks N people, you will get roughly 400 people who answer the question yes. The standard deviation in this number is sigma=sqrt(400*0.4*0.6)=9.8. For a normal distribution, the 95% certainty level comes at plus or minus 2*sigma. Thus, if 400 people answer yes, we can say that the 95% confidence range is 380 to 420 yes answers; pollsters would express this by saying that the poll yielded a result of 40% with a margin of error of 2%. (It is also likely that the poll would instead get an answer of 41% or 38%, but the margin of error would still be 2%.) Note that the size of the entire population never entered into this discussion. (We have assumed, however, that the population is much larger than the number of people questioned for the poll.) People often don't understand this, and don't realize how a poll of such a small number of people can be accurate.

"Also you say a sample of 1000 out of 300 million will get an answer accurate to within a few percent. Do you know exactly what the margin of error is and how to calculate it?"

(This should be 300 billion, not million.) I mentioned that if we detect no life around 1000 stars, we say with 95% certainty that P is less than 0.3%. This is based on a Poisson distribution. You can find more about this on the web, but I'll describe it briefly.

You've probably seen discussions of the probability of tossing a coin or a die. Suppose we have a die with many faces, and we're looking for some particular number; so the probability of success in each toss is P. We toss the die some huge number of times T, so the expected number of successes is A=P*T. Perhaps A is 10, so there's a good chance of getting 10 successes, but maybe we'll get 9 or 11, or some other nearby number. Note that the number of successes is an integer. What is the probability of getting exactly N successes? The answer is this:

probability = e^(-A) * (A^N) / N!

For small N, this distribution is highly asymmetric. As N gets larger, the distribution becomes increasingly symmetric and begins to resemble a normal distribution.

Now suppose we look at T=1000 stars, and P is the probability of intelligent life on each star. If A=P*T were 3, then the probability of finding 0 stars with life is 0.05%; so if we find 0 stars with life, we can say that we're 95% certain the probability of life is less than 3/1000 = 0.3%. Our best estimate of P is 0% (because we didn't find any life), but our estimate of the probable range is 0% to 0.3%. You might say that we have a 0.3% margin of error, but this phrase is more often used with a normal distribution (which is symmetric) than a Poisson distribution (which is not symmetric).

"Also based on your “Flat Earth” political party example, if intelligent life in the galaxy is extremely rare, does this mean that a sample size of 1 million won’t be big enough to yield a valid survey?"

Let's consider the more typical survey size of 1000 people, and assume that we find no Flat Earthers in that sample. Again, using a Poisson distribution, we can say that the expected number of Flat Earthers in 1000 people is probably less than 3 (with 95% certainty), so we can say that the fraction of the entire population of the country in this party is less than 3/1000 = 0.3%. It doesn't mean that the survey isn't valid. If we're trying to determine whether the Flat Earth candidate for president is a strong contender, the survey has told us convincingly that he is not. If our goal is to find out whether there are *any* people in the country who consider themselves members of this party, then we haven't succeeded (much like a SETI survey of 1000 stars without success leaves the question of life in the galaxy unanswered).
Reply:In my description of the Poisson distribution, I mistakenly substituted N for A. It should read "For small A, this distribution is highly asymmetric. As A gets larger ..." Report Abuse

Reply:In the third paragraph from the end, I should have said that the "probability of finding 0 stars with life is 5%", not 0.05%. I hit the YA length limit, and was unable to proofread my answer after submitting it. Report Abuse

Reply:I said that the standard deviation for a normal distribution is sqrt(N*p*(1-p)). I should have said "binomial distribution", not "normal distribution" (although the distribution of data in this example is essentially normal). I really miss the opportunity to proofread! Report Abuse

Reply:One more goof! In the Obama example, I should have said that the standard deviation is sqrt(1000*0.4*0.6)=15.5, so the margin of error (with 95% confidence) is plus or minus 3% (not 2%, as I said above). The N in sqrt(Npq) is the total sample size. Report Abuse

In a recent national survey, the mean weekly allowance for a 9 yr old is $3.65. A random sample of 45 nine yr

olds in Ohio revealed the mean allowance to be $ 3.65 with a standard deviation of .24. At the 0.5 level of significance , is there a difference in the mean allowances nationally and the mean allowances in Ohio for 9 years old.

In a recent national survey, the mean weekly allowance for a 9 yr old is $3.65. A random sample of 45 nine yr
Since n%26gt; large enough the sample is approximately normal.

Z = (3.65 - 3.65)/.24 = 0

Since the alternative hypothesis would intimate to me that the answer would be on either end... (i.e. not that you are testing whether Ohio is greater or less than average, but not average) that implies a 2-tailed test. Thus pushing your critical values away from zero and you accept the null hypothesis that Ohio is not different and the mean = 3.65

Sample of survey on bystander apathy?

This will probably be of absolutley no use to you but there was a story in my local paper which desribed a recent survey regarding the likeliness of people stopping to help at a road accident they had witnessed. It found that people who were driving alone or at night were less likely to attend the accident and overall many of the women said they probably wouldnt stop if they were alone, unfortunately I live in Scotland and have no exact figures from this article-I read it a few weeks ago. As for the answer above mine (Neodiogenes) bystander apathy DOES happen, more often than you'd think and its because people always seem to believe that 'other people' will help someone in need, unfortunately, these 'other people' are thinking the same! There is a very famous case about a woman who was brutally attacked (I think it was in New York but I cannot remember exactly) and the next day she was found dead on the street. The police did numerous door to door calls and nearly everyone said they had heard the womans screams for help, yet not one person called the police or went to help, they all believed someone else would. Numerous observational studies have also been done where an actor lies face down on the street (as if he has fainted etc) wearing either scruffy clothes or a suit. The man in the suit usually gets more help, but even he is usually walked past by many before someone stops to ask if he is ok-one study even showed a man STEPPING OVER the actor. A very interesting subject, I simply wish I could help you more!

Sample of survey on bystander apathy?
I've never seen a case of bystander apathy. I think it's a myth created by people who want to give big cities a bad name.
Reply:i can't find one. sorry

What is this census or sample survey?

a) to check the quality of the food provided by the school cafeteria. Some students in each class are asked to give their opinion

a)The hotel manager wants to know how many of their guests use th spa facilites

b)The school principal wants to know how many teachers need a computer by their desk.

c) A lawn-care companty wants to know if their customers prefer environmentally friendly products for their lawn

What is this census or sample survey?
It's a survey if you only interview a small group. It's a census if you interview everybody.

a) and b) are surveys. c) is census.

2)Population:

a)All those who use spa facilities.

b)All teachers who need a computer at their desk.

c)All customers prefer environmentally friendly products for their lawn.

What is the usual sample size for a survey?

a sample size of at least 10-20% of the population is acceptable for large populations. but say for example your population is just 20 or 50, i suggest you take all of them. remember, the bigger the sample size, the better your survey will be.

What is the usual sample size for a survey?
Well it really depends. If you want an extensive and information survey, then about 100 people. Try not to go beyond that or you'll have a hard time compiling the results and analyzing them. If you just want a simple and quick survey, I suggest about 20 people will be sufficient. :)
Reply:you need a minimum of 32

most are at least 500

Sample Survey or Census #2.?

For each situation, would you suggest sample survey or census to be conducted? Explain

a) A car manufacter wants to find out if Canadian familes with young children a minifan to a SUV as the family car.

b) A district school board wants to know how many students who are in grade 10 math achiv scores over 90%

State if each data is; discrete, contineous,or qualitive

a) favourite musical instrument of Grade 8 students

b) number of students on each school bus

c)temperature of boiling water as it cools.

Sample Survey or Census #2.?
Part 1:

a) Survey - you can't possibly interview the entire population of Canada to get this data, and the population is large enough to take a survey and have a sample large and random enough to get accurate data and reliable conclusions.

b) Census - this data should be readily available, and you should be able to get scores for every single student.

This is the difference between survey and census. One samples only part of a population (survey) while the other samples every single member of a particular group (census).

Part 2:

a) Qualitative - musical instruments are not numbers.

b) Discrete - you are counting students, and you can only have a whole number of students

c) Continuous - temperatures can be anything within a particular range (in this case 0C to 100C - or 32F to 212F)

What does it mean to take a random sample and how could you get a random sample when taking a survey?

Like the question says..

What does it mean to take a random sample and how could you get a random sample when taking a survey?
Taking a random sample means to take any value from a group with out being baised to any factors.

For example ina survey you go and ask any Tom Dick and Harry about their thoughts on the isues.

Like this we can make a safe assumption that since I have all the samples select random.

We can take the example of quality inspector of a textile company, in a lot he picks any 10 sample of shirt the inspect them if all are as per statndard then he assumes the whole lot is correct.

Hope this help.
Reply:A random sample is one where you attempt to avoid getting data from sources that might be biased. Such a bias can be caused by a wide range of effects, depending on what you're sampling.

Relating that to your survey question, for example, if you were doing a survey about the average person's fitness, it would not be random if you surveyed people exiting a gym, a Weight Watchers meeting or other non-average people.

The simple answer to randomizing a survey is to randomize the people you ask. Even then, the fact that you will only get _some_ people to cooperate tends to skew the results because you didn't get answers from the others who refused. IOW, people who volunteer to answer your questions may not represent a good cross-section of a population.
Reply:You can perform a random sample of, say, all business addresses in the city of Marietta, Georgia, by assigning each address a number, and putting that number in a bag, and then pull 10 numbers from that bag, for example. That would be a random statistical event. Of course other techniques using computer software, for example, is more appropriate for these techniques.

How do you calculate the sample size required for a statistically significant survey?

Where I work we do a lot of surveys and we have software that tells us if a sample size is statistically significant. But nobody can explain the parameters that affect this (e.g. does the size of the population matter?). Would really appreciate a simple explanantion. Thanks!

How do you calculate the sample size required for a statistically significant survey?
This document will teach you how to calculate optimal sample size.

http://www.osra.org/itlpj/bartlettkotrli...
Reply:It depends on how much error are you going to accept. The smalletr the error the bigger your sample. So on it depends on the size of the population. It's different to make an analysis on the consumer habbits of al US than making for your school.
Reply:Error=z*S/n^.5

S=Sample Standard Deviation

Error=IS the error from the average (Actual)

Z=Normal Distribution Value At (Alfa=.05)

so if ur accepeted error%26lt;.5....of something that has an average of 100

then n=Z^2*S^2/Err^2

where do u get S?

Have to do a pilot study...Compute S then do the sample size

Using High confidence makes the sample size need to increase...which is the Z Value (Can Get from Stats Table or excel)

if U do not want to do Pilot Study

Use this table for any thing if u impose he average on Surevy

Reply:I do believe it is 5% - 10% of the total population if the number is greater than 1000. Under that, I think it is 30% - 50%, as long as it is achievable.
Reply:The sample size is statistically significant when it is large enough to accurately represent the population. For example, would you use a sample of 1 person to represent a population of 100 people? Statistically significant solely means that the sample size is big enough to reflect on the general poplace.

the result of a sample survey show that out of 600 littrate people ,350 are employed whereas out of 500 illetrate people ,only 260 are employed.will more sample survey be able to depict the same difference between the proportions of persons employed

Sample survey the result of a sample survey shows that out of 500 litrate people ,350 are employed whereas out
H0: No difference in employment between illiterate and literate people

H1: Not so

Sample 1 proportion x1/n1 = 0.5833

Sample 2 proportion x2/n2 = 0.52

Pooled proportion pi= (350+260)/(600+500) = 0.5545

Varaince of difference in proportions = pi*(1/n1+1/n2)

= 0.554545(0.445455)(1/600+1/500) =0.0009058

S.D. of (p1-p2) is 0.0301

(p1-p2) = (0.5833-0.52)

Z = 0.0633 / 0.0301 = 2.1044

With a significance level of 0.05, the critical z

is 1.96. Since the computed z exceeds the critical z, the hull hypothesis H0 is rejected at 5 % level.

Would you say that my survey sample is representative?

-Our high school has a maximum of 800 students in total

-I surveyed 200 people in my high school

-This came up to: 40 random students from each grade (grade: 7, 8, 9, 10 11) (40 x 5=200)

-I randomly asked students in our school cafeteria to do my surveys

THIS WAS MY SURVEY:

Which of the following COLD beverages do you drink the most?

a) Water

b) Juice

c) Soda

d) Milk

e) Energy Drink

f) Other

Which of the following HOT beverages do you drink the most?

a) Coffee

b) Tea

c) Hot Chocolate

d) Other

IS MY SAMPLE REPRESENTATIVE? Can you justify your answer for me, please?

Would you say that my survey sample is representative?
I work with a company who make online surveys... and for any kind of study they consider 300 a good sample number... So I think a few more samples and you are good to go.
Reply:200 out of 800 is only one quarter of the school body.

More students needed. 300 or 350 would be more representative.
