Margin of error of a sample?

I am so lost! please hellp!!!

A National Retail Foundation survey found households intended to spend an average of $649 during the December holiday season (The Wall Street Journal, December 2, 2002). Assume that the survey included 600 households and that the sample standard deviation was $175.

a. With 95% confidence, what is the margin of error?

b. What is the 95% confidence interval estimate of the population mean?

c. The prior year, the population mean expenditure per household was $632. Discuss the change in holiday season expenditures over the one-year period.

Margin of error of a sample?
n=600

X=649

s175

a. ME is 14.1744

b.637.8256, 663.1744

c. i dont understand what this question is asking

but to find the ME you take a confidence leve of 95% with a degree of freedom of 599 which is aprox. 1.984 then you mulitiply that (1.984) by std dev/sq root of the sample size

so..

1.984 X 175/24.495

for b. you take the mean and ± the ME so 649±14.174

i hope that helps

The University of Michigan has this page with huge amount of links to data, classified by topic, industry, etc. and includes links to government data as well.

What is an example of a conclusion that a person might reach about this survey described in a representative s

In a representative sample. If a music producer conducts a survey around video games and wants to know what college students think of poular music. He conducts the survey in the area of the student union, what is the example of a conclusion the producer might reach based on this survey that might not be true about college students in general

What is an example of a conclusion that a person might reach about this survey described in a representative s
The survey is probably not going to be a simple random sample. The sampling method you are describing would probably best be desribed as a convenience sample. Students who do not frequent the student union would not be represented. If we only ask students who GO to the student union about their thoughts on video games, we won't adequately represent ALL students, including "bookworms" (who are studying in the library) or "commuters" (who go home at night) or "off-campus students". Perhaps we are conducting the survey on a day when there is an impromptu reggae band playing in the student union. We might conclude, then, that ALL college students like reggae music when in fact, the students included in the survey were coming to the student union specifically to SEE the reggae band.

What are the best sites for free stuff/samples?

Preferably ones that are not scam sites. That require a long survey to get a sample.

What are the best sites for free stuff/samples?
I check www.mysavings.com and www.heyitsfree.com just about every day. They troll the web for you, checking for free stuff and gathering it all in one place. Then, all you have to do is click on the links and it takes you straight to the site for the freebie. Uusallly, there is a very short form to fill in, not a survey. The freebies come in anywhere from a few days to 8 weeks. I've gotten skin care samples, razors, toiletries, books, an umbrella, a scarf and more! Have fun!!!

Reply:You can always go to the makeup counters in department stores and ask. They are more than happy to give away freebies because they know if you like a product, you will probably buy it.

Ask what they recommend for your skin and coloring, and when they ask if you want to buy it, say you're not sure, ask if they have samples so you can try it first. I worked at the Lancome counter at Macys...these people work on commission and would be more than happy to let you try it, if you come back its money in their pocket! It certainly doesnt hurt to ask. They will also do your makeup free to try out colors, you just have to book an appointment.

Statistics...survey?

I'm taking a math statistics class and i have to conduct a survey. I want to know if people lost weight and how did they lose it? How large should my population and sample be? What survey method do you think is best for this survey?

Statistics...survey?
u should also conduct the survey on Y/A and as well as ppl ur friends with! A big sample would be a good idea :)
Reply:In theory, the larger your sample the more reliable your results. In practice, however, this is a school project, so you have to keep it reasonable. Anything in between 10 - 50 people (however much you can manage) should be fine, I guess.

As for the methodology: A fully structured questionnaire; these are really the standard method in quantitative research (which is where statistics are most useful, anyway). A further advantage of this is that you can just give it to people and ask them to fill it out by themselves rather than you having to spend extra time interviewing them.

Make sure to include a demographics section (age, sex, maybe some economic status indicators) so that you can compare these to the overall results.

What would be a good Sports Marketing Research topic (study)? Something that can be researched and tested?

I'm having a hard time coming up with a good research topic for a class I'm taking in college. I want to do something in the field of Sports Marketing but I am having a hard time thinking of topics that are testable. By testable I mean that these topics need to be tested through surveys, sampling, etc.

Any Ideas?

What would be a good Sports Marketing Research topic (study)? Something that can be researched and tested?
A few ideas:

is there interest in selling assigned seating to games played in a bleacher style gym - some people like the top row where there is some back support; some like front row; others want something else? you could do a survey of people on their way into the gym, find out how much they'd be willing to pay, see if it is a total bomb - just make sure you tell them it is just for your class or you'll have some folks ticked off forever....

find out if there is interest in starting a Bball or hockey or tennis or ??? exhibition match. Like the pre-season BBall tournaments in Hawaii and Alaska (great Alaska shootout). Obviously this might be bigger than you could pull off, but you could find out if there is interest in the topic. Once again, the preseason tourneys recruit student atheletes. A Division II student has little worries about getting on national TV - unless their university has a big tournament that draws division I players - the television of the events on ESPN is what draws good Div. II players to the school - and it helps athletes get exposure.

Smaller items - new surface of an athletic field, roof for it, or build it period..... sold by a marketing idea - an auction for sports related items, dinner made by coach, selling labor of football team members for a day (money goes to team not to player).

hope it helps
Reply:Two ideas. What is the per share profit derived from having an NFL or MLB stadium branded with a corporate name, such as Busch Stadium in St Louis or SAFECO field in Denver.

Or

What is the profit ratio involved with sponsoring a community sports team; such as Bob's barber shop having their name on a little league team uniform. Or is it used as a charitable write off.
Reply:shoes?
Reply:Maybe consider supplements. All athletes take them you could compare and contrast which supplements work best for certain sports but they of course have to be legal. Or you can do the huge industry of soccer which is the most popular sport, Adidas is the #1 soccer brand, I'm also in a marketing class currently, so maybe you could research nike and see how they could boost their revenue by attracting more of the soccer world. Or why adidas is so successful in the sport and why they are actually number 1.

Performed a paired sample t-test but not sure how to interpret the results.?

I did a 10 question pre %26amp; post survey of the same 10 people. The mean difference is -1.3, Degrees of freedom= 9, standard error of the mean of d= .86, t-statistic for paired data = -1.51, Critical value for alpha .05 would be 2.262.

Now I am not sure how to know whether I accept or reject the null hypothesis. Not even sure what the null hypothesis should be.

My research is whether or not medication improves the school performance of ADHD children. Pre-Survey (before meds) and after survey (while on meds).

I have all these numbers and don't know how to make since of them. Guess I should've paid more attention in that statistics class!

Please help.

Performed a paired sample t-test but not sure how to interpret the results.?
It's very difficult to answer what the null hypothesis should be. If you don't know what you're comparing, then why do the test? I assume you are comparing pre and post test results. Your null hypothesis would most likely be that the test results are the same for both tests. It also sounds like you're preforming a one-sided test on what could be a two-sided test. You would reject any statistic that is above 2.262 or below -2.262 and this would give you an alpha of .05 (.025 on each tail). Basically it looks like you found a two-sided significant value (2.262) but think you're doing a one-sided test. If you're looking to see if there's a significant difference period, then you'd use the two-sided test. If you want to see if the second test scored better, then use the one - sided. (It'd be a lot easier to explain this if I knew exactly how you did the math). If you go above the significant value or below it then you reject the null. Regardless, this won't change your result in this case since your value is -1.51. Basically, any statistic outside of alpha means you reject the null because you have a statistically significant reason to say that the data in the first test is different than the data in the second test. You are making sure there is a significant difference in the data in order to say the medication made a change. Based on your results, you aren't seeing a change since the results. You would not reject the null hypothesis. This means that, based on your results, this drug does not alter test results in patients with ADHD. And yes, you should have paid more attention in statistics class. This stuff really isn't that difficult but you seem so lost. If you plan on doing more of this type of thing I'd suggest taking a stats class again or at least getting a stats textbook and look at it. Also, make sure this is the correct test and that you did it correctly. Based on what you've said, I'm assuming that your resulting t-statistic is correct and that you're using the correct test. It sounds like you have (comparing two results given what it's for) but make sure.
Reply:Based on what you have stated, your null and alternative hypotheses are:

H0: No difference between Pre and Post results.

H1: Post results show better results (medication improves performance)

I presume that the 10 people were the subjects of the experiment and their scores were recorded.

This is a one-tailed test. The critical value at alpha =0.05 is 1.833 (or -2.262 at alpha=0.025). Based on this, the null hypothesis is rejected. That is, medication has improved the subjects' performance.

A school principle wants to survey students to determine whether having internet access at home improves grade

1.) what type of sample would you suggest

2.) describe a technique for choosing the sample

i need help..... thank you

A school principle wants to survey students to determine whether having internet access at home improves grade
Does the principal have a purpose in mind the answer to the question, "Do students having internet access at home get better (or worse) grades than students without internet access at home get?"

Suppose that the principal believes that grades reflect learning, and he wants an indication of whether he can encourage learning by encouraging students' guardians to provide or deny home internet access to their wards.

Why survey students? The obvious reason is that students are in school and therefore accessible to be surveyed. But they still have to asked, and their answers have then to be tabulated correlated with their grades. But internet access is not a yes or no question. How available is the internet? How convenient is the connection and what is its speed? Dial-up, DSL, or cable? Is there competition from siblings and/or parents for computer time? What about chores, homework, sports, etc.? If a student lives with other students, then the student might be asked to provide information about the internet's home accessibility for those others, as well as for himself.

If the principal wants an indication of how he should guide guardians with whom he speaks about their wards, perhaps he should be surveying those guardians for the accessibility data. A "random" sample of the student body may not be what would be most useful. He could also ask those students and any other of his students sharing the same guardian(s) and compare their answers to check reliability.

But suppose the principal decides to use a representative sample of his entire student body to estimate the correlation of home internet access to grade (improvement) for the whole student body. The problem of sample selection is then how to select a sample that will be representative. Most anyone will tell you that the sample should be "random," but random surveying is more difficult than some people suppose it to be.

The principal could be tempted to go to three of his teachers and ask them to survey all of their students about their internet access, or all of their students of some randomly chosen periods... But it's doubtful that such an approach would yield a random sample. The principal's choice of teachers will be biased in some way. Perhaps he'll exclude coaches, because students don't carry pens to P.E. Perhaps he'll exclude art teachers, because students aren't "serious" in art class.

I suggest that the survey be given to every student. Practically, this means that the whole student body be surveyed at the same time. School absences are not random phenomena, so for rigorously valid results, absent students should be surveyed on their return to school.

If the sample size is to be reduced and remain representative, then some surveys should be selected/eliminated "randomly." For example, if IDs were assigned haphazardly, then the students can be sorted by ID and the survey of every seventh student by this sequence could be considered for the statistical study. Those implementing such a procedure ought to ask whether the effort required to eliminate part of the sample is justified by the reduction in effort required to process the remaining surveys. The answer will depend on details of the process which I cannot evaluate from this distance.

Imagine if only every seventh student by ID were selected to be surveyed. How would the principal collect his data? Would these students be called to a special assembly and interrogated there? If so, their grades might fall because of the classroom time they missed. Surveying the entire population is costly but eliminates sampling error.

Looking for advice on legal preperation for giving out free samples and surveys for a business not open yet?

I want to open a business where I would sell all-natural products for health, beauty, household, and pain management, as well as other things related to herbalism, aromatherapy and other natural health products. I have tested my recipes myself, and family has tested them for me, but I would like to get a table at a health and wellness fair to give surveys about my future business and to give out free samples with my name and number for people to try. I'm trying to find out about any legal preparations I need to make. I don't have a registered business name or anything, I just want to do some research to prepare myself a bit more before I continue on with the process of opening a small business. Any advice would be really appreciated.

Looking for advice on legal preperation for giving out free samples and surveys for a business not open yet?
You shouldn't need to worry about any legalities if you are not selling anything. However if you are selling these things you will need a retail license or a business license. I am a Naturopathic Doctor and I sell herbal meds to people. All I have is my business license. However I would be interested in what products you have to offer. If you could send me some samples I would love to try them out. As I end up ordering a lot of my stuff because I don't have the time to make everything myself dealing with my clientele. I have to much to do because I offer medical information as well as consultations to people in need of my services. You also may want to try nolo law they are a self help legal site. Make a disclaimer stating that you are not a doctor and that you do not claim that these products can cure anything. That will protect you from someone trying to sue you. You make no claims no law suit. Just tell them that they are designed to enhance wellness. Please email me seriously.
Reply:you need to look a this site. http://www.confidentialclaim.org
Reply:I would suggest talking to a business law attorney. Having a Pre Paid Legal plan makes this as cheap as $26 a month. If you want more information check out the link below.
Reply:I think your best bet would be first to incorporate, so that you could protect personal assets and limit personal liability - otherwise, imagine what could be at stake if someone gets sick, or claims to, from one of your samples.

You should also look into legal advice about drafting a disclaimer containing whether any of your products contain ingredients someone could be allergic to, whether they are approved or not by the FDA, what contraindications might be possible with any specific medications, etc.

Reply:I didn't know we were supposed to be.
Reply:I agree I think this is a great question, and I really hope that this is not a good sample of society, if so we are in trouble, there are alot of people on here that only seem to have half a brain!
Reply:I think so, considering everyone is in cognito and don't have to worry about being exposed. People tend to be their true selves in that case.
Reply:No. Do you want to know why? First off, who is asking? Secondly, there is this pesky margin of error thing. When you watch the news and you see at the bottom in small print, "-1/+1" that is the margin of error. Now if there is a 1 point diffrence in yes or no then that margin of error of -1 or +1 makes the poll or survey worthless. Now polls and surveys can have a margin of error up to 7% or more. Ideal a margin of error should be under 2 with the difference between the yes/no well over the margin of error. Hope that helps. A good college statistics class will bore you to death with all this.

The one thing I've noticed though, especially through yahoo 360, is that there seem to be a lot of people here that are writers, artists, dreamers....just more creative people in general. I don't know if that's a coincidence or if it's because people find it easier to be themselves here, but that's what I've observed. There are all kinds of amazing people here :)

I think the same thing is true of computer owners and operators...usually it will be wealthy, educated, urban and most of all BORED. The other thing about computer users is I think many of them are younger than the general population.

We have a large sampling of very young, bored and yet somewhat wealthy (compared to world standards anyway) and intellectual, older people. However, the intellectual, older people can usually find something better to do that work YA for opinions.

You question is sort of like saying "Are people who read dime novels and watch soap operas a good sampling of society?" Not really. The sampling is a little skewed for obvious reasons. I wouldn't trust YA to predict a presidential election but does take a cut out of the middle of society.

Advantege of sampling in any Survey?

Time and cost.

There is not enough man hours available to survey everyone...and not everyone will give you a response.

Advantege of sampling in any Survey?
Cost.

It is cost prohibitive to survey everyone in the population to get their opinion or find out some attribute about them. If we want to know if Americans agree with some point or another, we can't afford the time and cost to talk to over 200 million Americans. So, by sampling, say, 1000 people, you can get a "good enough" answer without talking to everyone.

This is usually accomplished by either a pure random sample or a stratified random sample. A stratified random sample for a survey might use "strata" to ensure that people of all age groups, gender, and socio-economic status are surveyed in proportion to their occurance in the population and not concentrated into those that might happen to be at home when the survey was performed. For instance, a pure random sample conducted during the day might bias toward the unemployed and stay at home moms and be less likely to include employed people.

These samples will have an "error" associated with them. This might be expressed as 51% of Americans agree with such and such, +/- 1%. This error is the "standard error" and is an estimate of how different the answer would be if you conducted the survey again with a different random sample of people.

Let's say we want to cut the error in half. So we now know the answer that 51% of Americans agree, +/- 0.5%. One aspect of sampling is the central limit theorem and it tells us that to cut the error in half requires a sample that is four (4) times larger, hence four times costly.

I need to do a survey regarding ice cream shops for my business class. Only takes 90 seconds…Please?

It’s for a school project so the more answers the better. Easy points.

If you’ve done this one already, I need a “larger sampling,” and the questions have changed just slightly. If you do fill it out again (which I have no problem with) just don’t tell me ;)

Which do you prefer and why? Coldstone, Maggie Moo’s or Marble Slab?

A survey claims that 9 out of 10 doctors recommend aspirin for their patients with headaches. To test this claim against the alternative that the actual proportion of doctors who recommend aspirin is less than 0.90, a random sample of 100 doctors results in 83 who indicate that they recommend aspirin. The value of the test statistic in this problem is approximately equal to:

a. -4.12

b. -2.33

c. -1.86

d. -0.07

A survey claims that 9 out of 10 doctors recommend aspirin for their patients with headaches. To test this cla
E(X) = mean = 100*0.9 = 90

Variance(X) = 100*0.9*(1-0.9) = 9

std. deviation = square root of variance = 3

Z = (X - mean) / standard deviation

Z = (83-90)/3 = -7/3 = -2.33

How do sample population studies equate to accurate statistics?

If it's a sample but not the whole population that's being studied/surveyed/polled, then the truth will never be known. How can a sample tell us about the entire planet?

How do sample population studies equate to accurate statistics?
They can't and don't. You're right statistics are not very dependable... you know that old saying numbers don't lie? But in reality they can, and they do. It's easy to manipulate numbers to get them to say what you want. Example the ratio toothpaste commercials use 2 out of 3 dentists recommend this. But if you put that ratio on a scale of millions it would be like 1 million dentist do not recommend this brand... and I'm not sure if that's a number I'm comfortable with. And percentages vs. fractions: Percentages always sound better because the numbers are generally smaller. Example, why say 1.4 million people in North America has aids, when it sounds less horrifying just to say 0.8%? And those numbers are completely true... But I hope you get what I'm saying. And people use numbers from biased sites. If one person gets a set of statistics from one site to 'prove' something another can get a set to ‘prove’ the exact opposite. And it is simply impossible to get an accurate reason for a whole population from just surveying a fraction of the people. That's how we get numbers that prove both sides of an argument absolutely right... and that's bad.
Reply:a sample population isnt meant to tell you about the entire plannet, its meant to tell you about a particular community about a particular subject. Like, if there are 1000 english professors in a department, you are not going to be able to question all of them, you take a sample of say 250 and ask them a question about what they teach in english class, and you get to see a window of what the rest might teach.

When a sample was surveyed on their preference for yogurt flavor, 12 said vanilla, and 8 said banana, the?

total group was 160, how many people were in the survey?

what is the probability that a person prefers vanilla [12% or 60% or 40% or 100%?

predict how many people of the 160 prefer vanilla? [64 or 100 or 96 or 12, if possible explain this

When a sample was surveyed on their preference for yogurt flavor, 12 said vanilla, and 8 said banana, the?
ok.....

1st part: the percentage of those who chose vanilla would be 60%

2nd part: about 100 chose vanilla......

reasoning....

12 +8=20

12 out of 20 people is like wut 55% about

so for the first answer 60% is closest

second answer.... 100 is closest to 60% of 160 people. (64 is less than 1/3 so not even close to the 60%)

Dear Raymond,

Your pertinent question and urgent curiosity has unfortunately, been buried under more legitimate concerns. If you don't get an answer within 24 hours, it is best to delete your query and ask again.

Raymond, I would like to take this opportunity to express my personal opinion. You have been foolish, Raymond. Very, very foolish. Anyone can see that the purpose of Yahoo! Answers is to serve as a modern chatroom. More and more, Java programming is becoming less and less supported, there is no other method of bringing people together in a social environment than to create PHP scripts where the "thinking" can be done on the server rather than on your machine. With that in mind, Raymond, you should interrogate the shallow-minded participants of Yahoo! Answers with matters that appeal to their common denominator. Questions such as, "How long is the normal tally whacker?" or, "My boyfriend says I should dump my hubby, what you think?"..., would get you a substantial number of replies.

Give up your pursuit of truth and petty wonders, Raymond. Quit asking bland, colorless questions. Are you naive? No person who is capable of giving you the answer you hoped for can last while reading though a heap of puddings, pies and pastry. I'm only doing you a favor, Raymond, by giving you a proper admonishment you can now begin to formulate an apology. When you are ready, send your atonement to http://surveys.yahoo.com/user_ad_feedbac...

And Raymond, if you insist upon asking serious questions, remember that a few good jolts from a peace officer's tazor should bring you around to your senses. Please, check your spelling and throw some slang into the mix so you don't offend any of the egos lurking, waiting to pounce on you with crass, thoughtless one-liners.

Thank you Raymond, and have a great day!

-Zach

I need some help with this sets question. In a survey in a sampl of students who wrote at least one of the?
Draw a diagram like this one:

http://i26.tinypic.com/2pt2erm.gif

I've labeled each section with the number of students in that section. For example, 19+x students wrote P only.

We also know that 26 wrote Q only, so from the diagram we have

22 + x = 26

So x = 4

(You should put this value for x into the diagram and confirm that the result agrees with the numbers given in the question.)

I leave the last question to you.

Reply:Welcome Ben, professor or student? You need not use a calculator or even more than a pencil and paper. Go to your local grocer and watch what they buy and ask is this your favorite. They might be buying for someone else. But, at the end of the day ice cream makers have done this based on sales, the winner believe it or not is vanilla. Mine is always chocolate.
Reply:I wouldn't bother. The ice cream industry has already done this a number of times over the years. They have found that plain vanilla always comes in first place, although in some surveys (like this one: http://gourmetfood.about.com/b/2006/07/0... ) chocolate comes in first (15% for chocolate, 12% for vanilla). Google "favorite ice cream" for lots of web sites about it.

What kind of questions should I ask on a survey, to determine if color affects peoples moods?

Im conducting an experiment, and I have almost everything I need in order to complete my experiment, but I also want to ask a survey to see if the questions I ask effect the answer of the person give according to the paper. I've researched for sample questions I can ask but im still having a lot of trouble.. can anyone offer some good advice for questions.. I would appreciate it greatly..

What kind of questions should I ask on a survey, to determine if color affects peoples moods?
If you are able to determine someone's mood from answers they give (Ex. "Do you normally visit the movies alone, yes/no why? Yes because I am a loner." You could probably guess they're depressed) then you can make the questions whatever color you like (as in the actual words in the question you would make yellow or whatever instead of the default black). So for the example question you could make it blue to see if you get alot of depressed answers.

You could also make all the questions someone gets one color and then give another person all their questions in a different color.

B-would not be representative. C-Law enforcement may encourage people to lie. D-People may not visit the college website for a reason or another.
Reply:A. would be the most representative, B would be the most disproportionate but could be worked in tandem with A if you factored in the % of male/female students who belong to social clubs, likewise for academic clubs.

The A still has it for simplicity.

D also has possibilities but is not as accurate as on the spot polling

b means youll just have a bunch of drinkers answering it.

4)A big pharmaceutical company conducted an initial survey to determine the chemical properties of few types?

4)A big pharmaceutical company conducted an initial survey to determine the chemical properties of few types of Verbena sp., a medicinal plant used by traditional doctors in parts of Argentina. Leaf samples were collected from thirty plants in each of three large populations for analysis in the lab. A fourth, small population was sampled as well, but as only 15 individuals could be easily located, the sample for this population consisted of two samples from separate branches of each of the 15 individuals. The sample from each plant/branch was placed in a labeled bag. While preparing the samples for chemical analysis in the lab, the lab technician found that six of the sampling bags had no labeling. However, as all the sampling bags were stacked in the order in which they were collected, the technician assigned each of the unlabeled sampling bags to a population by its location in the stack. The data were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA test to test the hypothesis that the levels of tannins didn’t differ among Verbena types.

a.Based on the information provided above, which of the assumptions of ANOVA may have been violated? Justify your answer.

b.Can you use the data (or parts of it) to test the research hypothesis in a way that will avoid the violation of this/these assumptions? If yes, please specify how.

I'm sorry, but you really need to do your own work. If you have a question about how to perform a mathematical operation or another generic question, feel free to post it. But blatently asking for us to do your homework for you? I don't think so, buddy.

Census or Sample ?

For each situation, would you suggest sample survey or census to be conducted? Explain

a) A car manufacter wants to find out if Canadian familes with young children a minifan to a SUV as the family car.

b) A district school board wants to know how many students who are in grade 10 math achiv scores over 90%

Census or Sample ?
a) "survey" can provide highly reliable estimates from a (surprisingly) low number of candidates.

b) "census" of precisely how many students so that school board can provide documentation of achievement to regulators, parents and students. Commencement excercises for example list student names who have achieved academic high scores.
