Standard deviation, confidence intervals, basic....?

I would like to learn about standard deviation and confidence interval. I am very bad at math and alergic to equations. Would you kindly explain in a very simple way why they are necessary when one conducts a sample survey... Grateful for your help! I am desperate....

Standard deviation, confidence intervals, basic....?
Without equations it is going ot be hard to be precise but:

Basically, when you take a sample, the mean (average) of your sample will be close to the "true" mean of the whole population. It will be closer if the sample size is larger. (Central Limit Theorem!) Confidence intervals allow you to say, with some amount of confidence: "I believe that the true value (mu) is in the interval between ...." the two numbers that come out of the formulas.
